Where it came from
Witty Demon is a 'playtest card' featured in the 2019 Mystery Booster release for Magic: The Gathering. These cards were designed by Wizards of the Coast developers to explore unconventional mechanics and design spaces that would not typically appear in standard, tournament-legal sets. They were inserted into Mystery Booster packs as a surprise inclusion, intended to provide a chaotic, lighthearted drafting experience that poked fun at the game's own complexity.
The visual and mechanical design of the card reflects the aesthetic of Wizards' internal playtest materials, intentionally utilizing a stark, stripped-back layout with placeholder artwork and minimal formatting. This design choice serves to emphasize the experimental nature of the card, stripping away the polished art and framing of a regular set to reveal the raw mechanics underneath. Because they were never intended for official tournament play, these cards are highly sought after by collectors interested in the developmental history and behind-the-scenes culture of the game.
