Provenance

Where it came from

The Angel token from the War of the Spark expansion was released by Wizards of the Coast in May 2019. This token was designed to represent the summoned creatures created by various planeswalker abilities within the set, specifically supporting cards like Serra the Benevolent. The token was intended to evoke the high-fantasy aesthetic central to the Ravnica-based conflict depicted in the set, serving as a functional piece of game hardware that also adhered to the set's distinct visual narrative.

The art was commissioned to provide a unified look for the angelic reinforcements appearing in the climactic battle against Nicol Bolas. Illustrators for the War of the Spark token suite were tasked with maintaining a cohesive style that bridged the gap between the chaotic atmosphere of the set and the serene, iconic imagery typically associated with angels in the Magic: The Gathering multiverse. The token was well-received by players for its utility in gameplay and its contribution to the immersive environment of the set's overarching storyline.
