Where it came from
Wizards of Thay was released in 2022 as part of the Commander Legends: Battle for Baldur's Gate set, a collaborative expansion between Magic: The Gathering and the Dungeons & Dragons franchise. The card was designed to embody the powerful, manipulative nature of the Thayvian necromancers found in the Forgotten Realms setting, specifically utilizing the 'Background' mechanic introduced in this set to allow players to customize their legendary creatures.
The artwork was created by illustrator Antonio José Manzanedo, who focused on capturing the dark, scholarly aesthetic of the Red Wizards of Thay. The design emphasizes the group's hierarchy and arcane influence within the lore of Faerûn. Upon release, the card was received as a key enabler for graveyard-focused and spell-heavy Commander decks, gaining appreciation from players for its thematic resonance and strategic utility in the multiplayer format.
