Where it came from
Just the Wind was originally released in the 2016 Shadows over Innistrad set for Magic: The Gathering, later appearing as number 60 in the 2018 Ultimate Masters set. The card was designed to highlight the 'madness' mechanic, a recurring theme in the gothic-horror themed Innistrad plane that allows players to cast spells for a reduced cost when they are discarded. This particular iteration was aimed at providing players with a versatile, low-cost utility spell that doubled as a removal tool to disrupt the opponent's board state.
The artwork for the Ultimate Masters printing retains the eerie, atmospheric aesthetic characteristic of the Innistrad setting. Illustrated to emphasize the haunting, ethereal nature of the wind and spirits common to the plane, the design process focused on capturing a sense of movement and instability. Upon release, the card was well-received within the competitive community for its utility in tempo-based decks, serving as a functional staple in several eternal formats where bounce spells remain a critical part of a player's strategic arsenal.
