Provenance

Where it came from

Woodland Stream was introduced in the 2016 expansion Shadows over Innistrad as part of a cycle of allied-color tap lands. The set drew heavily from gothic horror tropes, moving away from the high-fantasy aesthetic of many previous expansions to embrace an atmosphere of isolation, dread, and transformation. As an uncommon land, it served as a functional tool for Limited play, designed to help players navigate the set’s mechanical focus on color fixing in a slower, more deliberate environment.

The visual identity of the card was crafted by artist James Paick, who captured the eerie, muted palette consistent with the plane of Innistrad. Paick focused on the interplay between the encroaching, twisted vegetation and the stagnant, dark waters of the landscape to evoke a sense of decay. The design was received as a standard but effective component of the set’s landscape, successfully contributing to the cohesive world-building that defined the plane’s second visit in the Magic: The Gathering trading card game.
