Provenance

Where it came from

Word of Blasting was released in 1995 as part of the Ice Age expansion for Magic: The Gathering. As the game's fourth major set, Ice Age introduced a thematic shift toward a colder, apocalyptic aesthetic, moving away from the high-fantasy motifs of earlier releases to explore a world locked in a glacial epoch. The card was designed as a thematic spell reflecting the brutal, elemental nature of the setting.

The artwork for the card was illustrated by Quinton Hoover, a prolific artist known for his distinctive, often ethereal style that defined much of the early Magic era. Hoover focused on capturing the raw, kinetic discharge of energy implicit in the card's name, utilizing his signature line work to portray the destructive force of the spell. Upon its release, the card was viewed as a situational, flavor-heavy addition to the game, appreciated primarily by players drafting the set or those building decks around specific spell-based synergies.
