What it does
Look at target opponent's hand and choose a card from it. You control that player until Word of Command finishes resolving. The player plays that card if able. While doing so, the player can activate mana abilities only if they're from lands that player controls and only if mana they produce is spent to activate other mana abilities of lands the player controls and/or to play that card. If the chosen card is cast as a spell, you control the player while that spell is resolving.

Where it came from
Word of Command was released in the 1993 Unlimited Edition, the second printing of the Magic: The Gathering base set. Designed by Richard Garfield, the card was conceptualized during the game's formative period to explore unique gameplay mechanics, specifically the ability to manipulate an opponent's turn. It belongs to the game's earliest era, characterized by experimental design choices that pushed the boundaries of traditional card game interaction.
The card features artwork by Christopher Rush, one of the most prolific and iconic illustrators in the game's history. Rush utilized a distinct, evocative style that helped establish the visual identity of early Magic. While the card is a rare find today due to the limited print run of the early sets, it is regarded primarily as a curiosity of the game's infancy rather than a staple of competitive play, remaining a sought-after piece for collectors focused on the game's foundational history.
