What it does
Look at target opponent's hand and choose a card from it. You control that player until Word of Command finishes resolving. The player plays that card if able. While doing so, the player can activate mana abilities only if they're from lands that player controls and only if mana they produce is spent to activate other mana abilities of lands the player controls and/or to play that card. If the chosen card is cast as a spell, you control the player while that spell is resolving.

Where it came from
Word of Command was originally released in the 1993 Alpha set as one of the rarest cards in Magic: The Gathering. Its design, attributed to Christopher Rush, functions as an interrupt that allows a player to force an opponent to play a card from their hand, effectively turning the opponent's resources against them. The card occupies a unique mechanical space that has rarely been revisited in the game's history due to its complexity and power level.
The Collectors' Edition version was released in 1993 as a non-tournament legal boxed set intended for collectors. It is visually distinct from the original printings by its gold-bordered back and square corners, which were implemented to distinguish the cards from tournament-legal game pieces. Despite the lack of tournament utility, this version is highly sought after today as a representative of the game's foundational era and its early aesthetic direction.
