Wrath of God

Wrath of God was originally introduced in the Alpha set of Magic: The Gathering in 1993, designed by Richard Garfield as a definitive board-wipe mechanic. It became a foundational staple of white deck strategy, offering players a way to reset the battlefield by destroying all creatures simultaneously. The card's enduring presence in the game stems from its efficiency and the stark, uncompromising nature of its effect, which has remained a hallmark of white control archetypes for decades.

The Ninth Edition printing, featuring the artwork by Kev Walker, was released in 2005. Walker’s interpretation moved away from the more ethereal depictions found in earlier iterations, providing a visceral, darker aesthetic that emphasized the card's theme of total destruction. This version is particularly notable for its inclusion in the core set during a period when Wizards of the Coast was refining the visual identity of the game, and it remains a favored version among collectors for its clean, modern border and striking illustration.
