Where it came from
Wrath of the Skies was released in 2024 as part of the Modern Horizons 3 expansion for Magic: The Gathering. This set was designed specifically to introduce new, high-powered cards into the Modern format, bypassing the standard rotation of the game's core sets. The card serves as a flexible board wipe, utilizing the energy counter mechanic to scale its impact based on the mana invested, reflecting the set's focus on complex, synergistic gameplay.
The card features artwork by illustrator Johannes Voss, who has been a long-standing contributor to the game's aesthetic. His design approach for this piece focuses on the dramatic, sweeping celestial nature of the spell, capturing a sense of overwhelming atmospheric power. The card was met with immediate attention from competitive players due to its efficiency and versatility, becoming a staple in various control and midrange strategies within the format.
