Sarpadian Simulacrum

Sarpadian Simulacrum was released as part of the Modern Horizons 3 expansion for Magic: The Gathering in 2024. The card draws heavily on the lore of the Sarpadian Empires from the game's early history, specifically referencing the fallen Thrull-creating civilizations that first appeared in the 1994 expansion Fallen Empires. By revisiting this obscure thematic ground, the design team aimed to evoke a sense of nostalgic mechanical depth while integrating modern power levels into the current game environment.

The art and mechanical identity of the card were crafted to reflect the macabre, industrial nature of Sarpadian experiments. Illustrators focused on the eerie, patchwork aesthetic of the simulacrum to bridge the gap between the game's vintage aesthetic and contemporary visual standards. Upon release, the card was received as a flavorful, albeit niche, utility piece that appealed largely to players interested in graveyard synergy and the historical narrative threads that define the game's long-term world-building.
