Where it came from
Wrinkly Monkey Shenanigans is part of the sticker sheet collection introduced in the 2022 Magic: The Gathering set Unfinity. These sheets were designed as a mechanical novelty for the game's silver-bordered 'Un-set' tradition, which prioritizes humor and experimental gameplay over standard tournament rules. The sticker mechanic allows players to modify creature stats, names, and abilities mid-game, effectively acting as persistent, semi-permanent counters that travel between zones.
The art and design for these stickers were created by the Wizards of the Coast internal art team to reflect the carnival-themed, absurdist tone of Unfinity. The stickers feature stylized, eccentric characters like the Wrinkly Monkey, leaning into the whimsical aesthetic that defines the set. While the sticker mechanic proved controversial among players due to its complexity and integration into competitive formats, it remains a notable example of Wizards of the Coast's willingness to push the physical boundaries of card game components.
