Where it came from
The Slimy Burrito Illusion sticker sheet was released in 2022 as part of the Unfinity expansion for Magic: The Gathering. Designed as part of the set's central gimmick involving sticker mechanics, these sheets were intended to introduce a whimsical, arcade-style aesthetic to the card game's legal play environments. The artwork, crafted by the Wizards of the Coast internal creative team, leans into the 'retro-futuristic carnival' theme that defines the Unfinity visual language, prioritizing vibrant, humorous iconography over traditional high-fantasy tropes.
This specific sheet is noted for its inclusion of the 'Slimy Burrito' name, which reflects the design philosophy of Mark Rosewater, the set's lead designer. Rosewater sought to push the boundaries of silver-bordered design by creating 'stickers' that players could physically apply to cards during a game. The reception was polarized among the community, as the permanent nature of the stickers on cards caused significant debate regarding legacy and eternal formats, though the quirky illustrations themselves were widely praised for their playful, non-traditional design.
