Where it came from
Yisan, the Wanderer Bard first appeared in the 2014 Magic: The Gathering set Journey into Nyx, themed around Greek mythology. The character represents a human bard who wanders the lands of Theros, capable of summoning creatures through his song. The specific Secret Lair version, collector number 1196, was released as part of the 'Artist Series: Johannes Voss' drop, celebrating the illustrator's ethereal and soft-edged aesthetic that has become a hallmark of modern card art.
The design of this specific card was executed by Johannes Voss, who utilized his signature style of vibrant, dreamlike lighting to reimagine the character. In this depiction, Yisan is presented with a more intimate, watercolor-inspired focus compared to his original, more rigid fantasy illustration. The card was well-received by players and collectors who favor artistic variants, as it softened the character's traditional look into something more evocative and contemplative.
