Where it came from
You're Confronted by Robbers was released in 2022 as part of the Commander Legends: Battle for Baldur's Gate expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set was designed to capture the flavor and mechanics of the Dungeons & Dragons Forgotten Realms setting, specifically focusing on the city of Baldur's Gate. Mechanically, the card was designed to simulate a classic tabletop encounter, utilizing the set's signature dice-rolling mechanic to determine the outcome of a skirmish.
The card's illustration, crafted by artist Olena Richards, depicts a tense, dimly lit alleyway confrontation. Richards sought to evoke the suspenseful atmosphere common to early Dungeons & Dragons campaigns, emphasizing the precarious nature of an ambush. Upon release, the card was received as a flavorful, albeit situational, inclusion for black-aligned Commander decks that benefit from high-variance effects and thematic roleplay elements.
