Where it came from
Zagras, Thief of Heartbeats was released as part of the Zendikar Rising set in 2020, specifically appearing in the supplemental promo series for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. The character is depicted as a powerful vampire rogue, embodying the gothic horror and adventurous exploration themes prevalent in the Zendikar plane. It was designed to function as a high-impact legendary creature, rewarding players for building decks centered on party mechanics and creature synergy.
The card’s illustration was crafted by artist Jason Rainville, who captured the character's predatory nature and dark elegance through sharp, aggressive lines and a muted color palette. Upon its release, Zagras was received with interest by the Commander format community, where his ability to grant deathtouch and haste to other creatures provided a unique tactical advantage. The promo version, featuring distinct holographic foiling and set identification, remains a sought-after piece for players who focus on tribal themes and aesthetic consistency.
