Zahid, Djinn of the Lamp

Zahid, Djinn of the Lamp was released in the 2018 Magic: The Gathering expansion set Dominaria. The set was designed as a nostalgic return to the game's original plane, aiming to balance modern card design mechanics with the high-fantasy aesthetic that defined early iterations of the game. As a legendary creature, Zahid was created to function as both a powerful centerpiece in limited play environments and a flavorful nod to the classic Arabian Nights expansion, which first introduced Djinn creatures to the card game's lore.

The card features artwork by illustrator Johannes Voss, who utilized a vivid color palette and dynamic composition to depict the Djinn emerging from a magical lamp. Voss sought to capture the sense of monumental scale and ethereal power associated with classic mythological genies, contrasting the subject's imposing physical form with the intricate, metallic details of its vessel. Upon its release, the card was well-received by players for its ability to cheat mana costs, making it a staple of blue-aligned aggressive decks during the Dominaria draft season.
