Where it came from
Zealous Persecution was originally released as an uncommon card in the 2009 Magic: The Gathering set Alara Reborn. It was designed as a thematic representation of the Esper shard's influence, reflecting the rigid, artifact-heavy culture of that plane through its effect of strengthening one's own creatures while weakening the opponent's forces. The card became a staple in various constructed formats, particularly in Modern, for its utility as a board-stabilizing spell.
The version from Eternal Masters, featuring the artwork by Jason Felix, serves as a high-quality reprint intended for the drafting environment of the set. Released in 2016, Eternal Masters focused on curating powerful and historically significant cards from throughout the game's history. This specific printing maintains the original mechanical design while updating the aesthetic presentation to align with the curated, premium nature of the Masters series.
