Where it came from
Animate Dead first appeared in the Alpha set in 1993, representing the necromantic themes central to the early identity of the black mana color identity in Magic: The Gathering. Its unique design, which functions as an enchantment that brings a creature from the graveyard into play while imposing a power and toughness penalty, has made it a staple of the game's graveyard-based archetypes for decades.
The version from the Eternal Masters set, released in 2016, features art by Matt Stewart. This edition was created as part of a curated set designed to provide players with access to historically significant cards for the Vintage and Legacy formats. Stewart’s illustration updates the card's visual aesthetic while maintaining the grim, atmospheric tone that collectors associate with the card's original debut.
