Where it came from
Zimone's Experiment was released as part of the Secrets of Strixhaven subset within the Strixhaven: School of Mages expansion for Magic: The Gathering. Debuting in 2021, the card was designed to highlight the academic focus of the Prismari and Quandrix colleges, specifically centering on Zimone Wola, a gifted student of the latter college known for her prowess in complex mathematical magic. The set was conceived as a thematic exploration of a magical university, blending high-fantasy tropes with collegiate aesthetics.
The card illustration was executed by artist Bryan Sola, who aimed to capture the essence of Zimone manipulating magical currents through geometric constructs. The design leans heavily into the clean, ethereal visual language established for the Quandrix faction, emphasizing growth and analytical sorcery. Upon its introduction, the card was noted for its utility in ramp-based strategies, reflecting the character’s lore-driven role as an inquisitive and capable prodigy within the university setting.
