Mountain

The Mountain card from the Secrets of Strixhaven set serves as one of the basic land offerings within the Magic: The Gathering expansion released in April 2021. The set is themed around Strixhaven University, an elite institution for magical learning located on the plane of Arcavios, characterized by its five distinct colleges each representing a different two-color philosophy. This specific iteration of the Mountain reflects the visual aesthetic of the campus, integrating the architecture of the university with the fundamental mana source of red magic.

The artwork for this card was commissioned to capture the scholarly yet untamed environment of the university. Illustrators tasked with the Strixhaven basic lands were asked to bridge the gap between academic grandeur and the natural elements of the setting. The final design was received as a cohesive part of the expansion's world-building, valued by players for its ability to maintain the functional simplicity of a basic land while grounding the game's mechanics in the specific narrative identity of the Strixhaven setting.
