Provenance

Where it came from

The Zombie token from the Unstable expansion, released by Wizards of the Coast in December 2017, was created as part of the game's third silver-bordered set. Designed to break the traditional conventions of Magic: The Gathering, the Unstable set focused on experimental mechanics and meta-humor. These tokens were included in booster packs to represent the creatures summoned by various cards within the set, serving as both functional game components and a showcase for the set's distinct, whimsical art style.

The visual identity of this token was crafted to reflect the chaotic, laboratory-inspired aesthetic of the Unstable world. The illustration leans into a stylized, cartoonish interpretation of the undead, moving away from the grim realism typical of standard sets to fit the lighthearted nature of the release. It was received by the player base as a charming collectible that prioritized personality and visual flair, becoming a sought-after piece for players who enjoy customizing their play experience with thematic accessories.
