Zombified

Zombified was released in 2017 as part of the Unstable set, the third silver-bordered expansion for Magic: The Gathering. Designed as a parody set, Unstable focused on subverting the traditional rules of the game to create a humorous and unpredictable play experience. The card was created to lean into the set’s chaotic theme, using a mechanical prompt that forces players to engage in lighthearted physical or verbal interaction, which is a hallmark of designer Mark Rosewater’s approach to these unconventional sets.

The artwork for Zombified was illustrated by Christopher Rush, an iconic artist in the Magic: The Gathering community known for his work on some of the game's earliest and most recognizable cards. The illustration captures a whimsical, macabre aesthetic that fits the irreverent tone of the set. Like the rest of the Unstable collection, the card was received primarily by hobbyists and casual players as a clever departure from the game’s standard serious lore, though it remains ineligible for use in sanctioned tournament formats due to its design intent.
