Where it came from
Zur the Enchanter originally debuted in the 2006 Coldsnap expansion, a set designed to evoke the mechanics and aesthetic of the long-lost Ice Age block. The card was created to serve as a powerful build-around engine for the Commander format, allowing players to search their library for low-cost enchantments and place them directly onto the battlefield. This version from Modern Masters 2017 features the iconic original illustration by Greg Staples, who captured the character’s dark, scholarly aesthetic with a focus on cold, atmospheric lighting that aligns with the character's origins in the frozen world of Terisiare.
The Modern Masters 2017 reprint was intended to improve the accessibility of popular staples for Modern and Commander players. By re-releasing the card with updated frame technology and the distinct holographic security stamp, Wizards of the Coast sought to maintain the card's prestige while supporting the growing community of players who favor enchantments-matter strategies. The card remains widely regarded for its unique ability to tutor directly into play, making it a persistent presence in competitive card gaming history.
