Where it came from
Zzzyxas's Abyss was released in 2004 as part of Unhinged, the second 'un-set' produced by Wizards of the Coast for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. These sets were designed to explore humorous, non-traditional mechanics that would be impossible or nonsensical within the game's strict competitive rules, prioritizing wit and novelty over standard tournament play.
The card was illustrated by Ron Spencer, a prominent artist known for his distinctive, visceral style during the game's formative years. The design plays on the concept of alphabetical sorting, a recurring theme in the set, and serves as a humorous nod to the exhaustive nature of card indexing and the inevitable 'abyss' of organization that deep-level collectors face when managing large inventories.
