Provenance

Where it came from

The Rod of Spanking was released in 2004 as part of the Unhinged expansion for Magic: The Gathering, a silver-bordered set intentionally designed for humor and unconventional gameplay mechanics. It was created by Wizards of the Coast as a parody of traditional fantasy tropes, specifically poking fun at the 'Rod of' naming convention common in classic role-playing games while introducing mechanics that required physical player interaction.

The card illustration was provided by Mike Dringenberg, a veteran artist known for his work on The Sandman series. Dringenberg employed a distinct, whimsical style that captured the lighthearted and subversive nature of the set. Upon its release, the card was received as a quintessential example of the 'Un' sets' goal: to challenge the serious competitive boundaries of the game through satire and meta-humor.
