Black Jack

Black Jack was serialized in Weekly Shonen Champion between 1973 and 1983, emerging during a period where Osamu Tezuka, often called the father of manga, sought to revitalize his career by returning to his medical roots. The narrative follows an unlicensed but brilliant surgeon who performs seemingly impossible operations, often serving as a critique of the medical establishment and a meditation on the ethics of human life. This specific volume, part of the widely recognized English omnibus editions by Vertical Inc., serves to preserve Tezuka's original vision for a contemporary international audience.

The character design reflects Tezuka's signature style, characterized by expressive, cinematic paneling that masks profound philosophical questions about morality and science. Black Jack’s stark appearance—his patchwork skin and cape—serves as a visual shorthand for his status as an outcast who exists on the periphery of conventional society. Upon its release, the series was praised for its balance of high-stakes tension and emotional depth, cementing its place as a cornerstone of the medical drama genre in manga and influencing countless works that followed.
