This catalog represents a quintessential nineteenth-century Dutch estate sale record, specifically documenting the dispersal of the private library and collection of C.J. Vaillant. Published in 1849, it was produced to facilitate a public auction overseen by the established bookseller and auctioneer W.P. van Stockum in The Hague. Such catalogs were essential tools for bibliophiles and scholars of the era, providing a structured inventory of the deceased's intellectual assets, which included diverse scientific volumes, art treatises, cartographic materials, and numismatic items.

The document was designed with the utilitarian focus characteristic of mid-1800s auction house lists, prioritizing clear categorization and descriptive brevity to assist potential bidders. These catalogs were often printed on modest paper stock and serve today as vital primary sources for provenance researchers and historians of the book trade. They offer a rare glimpse into the collection habits of the Dutch professional and intellectual classes of the period, reflecting the breadth of interest that defined Vaillant’s personal library.
