This catalog was published in 1874 to facilitate the auction of a significant private library held by the Utrecht bookseller J. L. Beijers. During the nineteenth century, auction catalogs of this nature served as essential bibliographic records for scholars and collectors, documenting the circulation of rare texts and fine art prints among the Dutch intelligentsia. The term 'letterkundige en bibliomaan' (man of letters and bibliophile) was commonly employed in such listings to signal the high provenance and curated quality of the collection to potential buyers.

The catalog reflects the scholarly traditions of 19th-century Dutch book trade, emphasizing meticulous categorization and descriptive precision. J. L. Beijers was a prominent figure in the European antiquarian book trade, and these catalogs were designed not merely as sales lists, but as lasting reference works. Their reception within the period was marked by their utility to librarians and researchers, who relied on these documents to track the movement of rare editions that were frequently changing hands during the era's robust book market.
