This catalog was produced for a public auction held in Amsterdam in the mid-19th century, serving as a comprehensive record of the consolidated libraries of five prominent Dutch bibliophiles and scholars: J.W. Holtrop, C. Bax, J.D. Steuerwald, H.J. Kniphuisen, and J. Kros. Such catalogs were essential tools for 19th-century book collectors, providing detailed inventories of rare works, manuscripts, and prints that were being dispersed into the private market. The inclusion of equipment, such as J.D. Steuerwald's large iron relief press and various bookcases, indicates that this auction was not merely a sale of books but a liquidation of complete working collections and bibliographic infrastructure.

The document stands as a testament to the culture of Dutch estate sales during the Victorian era, reflecting the intellectual interests of the individuals involved. Holtrop, in particular, was a significant figure in library science and bibliography, lending the catalog a degree of scholarly importance beyond a standard auction list. These catalogs were designed with clarity and utility in mind to facilitate the bidding process for other collectors and booksellers, documenting the flow of rare material across European private collections during a period of intense historical and literary preservation.
