Gerard to Jacques

Gerard to Jacques is a classic boys' love (BL) manga collection created by Fumi Yoshinaga and originally published in the late 1990s. The work serves as an early showcase of Yoshinaga's signature narrative style, characterized by witty dialogue, nuanced character relationships, and an interest in historical or European-inflected settings. It emerged during a period when the genre was beginning to diversify beyond traditional tropes, marking Yoshinaga as a distinct voice in the medium before her later, more mainstream success with series like Antique Bakery.

The collection features several short stories that explore themes of intimacy and domesticity, often utilizing a sophisticated, minimalist aesthetic that eschews the more dramatic visual stylings common in late-90s shōjo manga. Yoshinaga’s approach to illustration emphasizes emotive facial expressions and body language over intricate backgrounds, a design choice that draws focus squarely onto the interpersonal chemistry of the protagonists. It was well-received by readers for its mature, understated tone and remains a notable entry in the author's extensive bibliography.
