Where it came from
Getter Robo Anthology: Shinka no Ishi, published in 2009, stands as a tribute to the enduring legacy of the Getter Robo franchise, which was originally conceived by Go Nagai and Ken Ishikawa in 1974. This anthology was released to celebrate the evolution of the series, gathering various manga artists to reinterpret the iconic super robot that pioneered the concept of combined mecha. It serves as a bridge between the classic roots of the franchise and the diverse aesthetic sensibilities of contemporary creators.
The volume features a collaborative collection of short stories and illustrations rather than a single narrative arc. By inviting different mangaka to contribute, the publishers aimed to showcase how the central theme of 'Getter Rays'—the mysterious energy driving the series—has influenced generations of artists. The design emphasizes the gritty, high-stakes tone established by Ishikawa, aiming to maintain the intensity of the original source material while allowing for experimental visual interpretations.
