Goethes sämtliche werke: Benvenuto Cellini

This volume is part of the comprehensive collected works of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, representing a nineteenth-century effort to consolidate his extensive literary contributions into standardized library editions. Goethe’s fascination with Benvenuto Cellini was profound; he spent years translating Cellini’s famous autobiography from Italian to German, viewing the Renaissance goldsmith’s life as a vibrant, essential study of individual character and creative vitality.

The publication of Goethe's translation served both as a scholarly project and a cultural bridge, introducing the German public to the raw, unfiltered voice of the Renaissance master. Designed to fit within the formal aesthetic of mid-to-late nineteenth-century European bookmaking, these editions were crafted for the educated home library, emphasizing intellectual permanence and a restrained, classical presentation that mirrored the era's reverence for Goethe as a titan of literature.
