Goethes Werke: 4. Abth., Briefe, 1.-50. Bd

This collection represents a significant portion of the Weimar Edition, or Weimarer Ausgabe, which was commissioned by Grand Duchess Sophie of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach in the late 19th century. Initiated to provide the first comprehensive and critical compilation of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's complete writings, the project sought to organize the vast output of Germany's most influential literary figure into four distinct sections. The fourth section, Briefe, specifically chronicles Goethe's extensive correspondence, providing scholars and readers with unparalleled insight into his intellectual development and personal relationships.

The editorial work was undertaken by a committee of prominent philologists and historians under the direction of Bernhard Suphan, who aimed for a level of rigor and completeness that had previously been lacking in Goethe scholarship. The design reflects the scholarly tradition of its era, prioritizing legibility and a standardized format that would maintain consistency across the massive set. Upon its publication, the Weimar Edition was hailed as a monumental achievement in literary history, becoming the definitive source for academic study and remaining a cornerstone of Goethe research to this day.
