Goethes Werke in zwölf Bänden: Italienische Reise

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's 'Italienische Reise' (Italian Journey) chronicles his transformative expedition through Italy between 1786 and 1788. Goethe composed the work years after his return, blending his original travel diaries with letters and later reflections to construct an idealized vision of his encounter with classical antiquity and the Italian Renaissance. This specific volume is part of a twelve-volume collected edition designed to present Goethe's vast literary output as a cohesive national canon.

The editorial tradition for these twelve-volume sets often mirrors the 19th-century desire to organize German Classicism into accessible, scholarly sequences. These editions typically prioritize clear, readable typography and modest, durable binding, intended for both private study and institutional libraries. While the specific layout of this edition adheres to traditional German publishing standards, the work itself remains a foundational text of travel literature, widely praised for its observational depth and profound influence on European aesthetic sensibilities.
