Goethes Werke: Italienische Reise

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's Italienische Reise, or Italian Journey, was compiled and published between 1816 and 1817. It documents the author's transformative sojourn through Italy between 1786 and 1788, a period during which he sought to escape the bureaucratic demands of Weimar and rediscover his artistic vigor. The text serves as a blend of travelogue, autobiography, and intellectual inquiry, capturing his profound fascination with classical antiquity and the Renaissance.

The design and tone of the work reflect Goethe's pursuit of 'classical composure' and objective observation, distinguishing it from the more sentimental travel literature of his contemporaries. Upon its release, the book was received as a seminal contribution to German literature, marking a departure from his earlier 'Sturm und Drang' phase. It has since remained a cornerstone of European travel writing, celebrated for its keen aesthetic insights and its role in shaping the Western perception of Italy as a cradle of cultural rejuvenation.
