Goethes werke in form und text ihrer erstausgaben: Götz von Berlichingen

This volume is part of the 'Goethes Werke in Form und Text ihrer Erstausgaben' series, a scholarly publishing initiative designed to provide readers with an authentic experience of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's literature as it originally appeared to his 18th-century audience. By prioritizing the typography, layout, and textual nuances of the original first editions, the series acts as a facsimile-style bridge between modern scholarship and the historical conditions of the German Enlightenment and the Sturm und Drang movement.

Götz von Berlichingen, the central work of this specific volume, was first published in 1773 and stands as a foundational text of German literature. The design of this edition recreates the raw, energetic spirit of the original play, which famously broke with classical constraints to introduce a more rugged, nationalistic form of historical drama. The editorial approach for this series seeks to maintain this historical integrity, ensuring that the reader encounters the text with the same structural presentation that defined Goethe's early career and established his reputation as a pioneering literary force.
