Goethes Werke: IV. Abteilung 11. Band

This volume is part of the Weimarer Ausgabe, also known as the Sophienausgabe, which stands as the definitive historical-critical edition of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s complete works. Commissioned by Grand Duchess Sophie of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach in the late 19th century, the project aimed to create an exhaustive, scholarly record of the author's legacy based on the Goethe- und Schiller-Archiv holdings. The fourth section, or Abteilung, is specifically dedicated to Goethe’s extensive correspondence, serving as a cornerstone for literary historians seeking to understand the intellectual networks of the German Enlightenment.

The design of this series reflects the rigorous editorial standards of its time, prioritizing clarity, accessibility, and durability for academic research. Editors and philologists worked to organize thousands of letters chronologically, providing detailed annotations that contextualize Goethe’s personal and professional exchanges. Since its inception, the edition has been received as the authoritative standard for Goethe scholarship, serving as the primary source material for generations of biographers and researchers interested in the evolution of European literature and thought.
