Where it came from
Jigoro! was serialized in Shogakukan's Weekly Shonen Sunday between 1981 and 1985. It represents one of Naoki Urasawa’s earliest major works, appearing shortly after his professional debut. The series follows the life of Jigoro, a judo-obsessed high school student whose single-minded dedication to the sport often leads to humorous misunderstandings and chaotic social interactions, reflecting the lighthearted sports comedy tropes popular in manga during the early 1980s.
Urasawa’s design and illustrative style in this period were significantly more cartoony and exaggerated compared to the intricate psychological thrillers he would later become famous for. The character work focuses on expressive, slapstick-heavy physicality to match the absurdity of Jigoro's martial arts fixation. While it predates his more mature storytelling, the series was well-received as an energetic showcase of his early potential for character-driven narrative development.
