Where it came from
Legend of the End of the Century's Leader Takeshi! was serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump starting in 1997. Created by Mitsutoshi Shimabukuro, the manga serves as a parody of the post-apocalyptic shonen action tropes popularized by series like Fist of the North Star. The narrative follows a protagonist who aspires to be a leader of a group of warriors in a world ravaged by chaos, often using absurdity and slapstick comedy to subvert the expectations of the hyper-masculine genre.
The character designs and visual style reflect Shimabukuro's penchant for caricature and exaggerated expressions, which became a hallmark of his comedic storytelling. The series was well-received by readers for its distinct tonal shift away from traditional battle manga, carving out a dedicated following for its irreverent humor. It stands as a significant title in the late 1990s Jump library, representing a period where comedic gag manga occupied a prominent space alongside mainstream action series.
