Where it came from
Legend of the Galactic Heroes: Portraits of Heroes serves as a supplementary art and lore volume for the expansive space opera series created by Yoshiki Tanaka. Following the massive success of the original novel series, which debuted in the early 1980s, this collection was compiled to provide fans with deeper insights into the complex cast of characters and the intricate political landscape of the Galactic Empire and the Free Planets Alliance.
The volume features detailed character profiles and illustrations that capture the refined, classical aesthetic associated with the series. Tanaka’s work, which explores themes of autocracy versus democracy and the burdens of military leadership, was meticulously translated into visual form in this collection to satisfy the high demand for expanded world-building. It remains a staple for enthusiasts documenting the visual history of one of Japanese science fiction's most significant literary achievements.
