Legend of the Galactic Heroes, or Ginga Eiyuu Densetsu, originated as a sprawling space opera novel series written by Yoshiki Tanaka. Begun in the early 1980s, the series was conceived as an epic historical drama transposed onto a vast interstellar canvas, focusing on the tactical and philosophical struggle between the Galactic Empire and the Free Planets Alliance. Tanaka drew inspiration from the history of the Napoleonic Wars and the decline of the Roman Empire, crafting a narrative that prioritizes grand geopolitical maneuverings and the moral complexities of leadership over traditional science fiction tropes.

The series is noted for its intricate characterizations, particularly the dual protagonists Reinhard von Lohengramm and Yang Wen-li, who serve as brilliant, opposing mirrors of one another. The original novels were illustrated by Naoyuki Kato, whose work helped define the stoic and militaristic aesthetic of the series.
