Moriarty the Patriot, titled Yuukoku no Moriarty in Japanese, is a spin-off manga series that reimagines the origins of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s antagonist, William James Moriarty. Created by Ryōsuke Takeuchi and illustrated by Hikaru Miyoshi, the series was first serialized in Shueisha’s Jump Square magazine in 2016. The narrative flips the perspective of the traditional Sherlock Holmes stories, portraying Moriarty as a criminal mastermind seeking to dismantle the rigid class structure of the Victorian era through calculated, often lethal, social reform.

The second volume, which includes acts covering the conflict surrounding the golden army and further expansions on the Holmes-Moriarty dynamic, continues the series' signature blend of gothic aesthetics and political intrigue. Hikaru Miyoshi's art style is noted for its sharp character designs and atmospheric depiction of industrial London, which has been widely praised for grounding the high-stakes philosophical debates within a compelling visual framework. The series has since become a significant entry in the modern reimagining of classic detective literature, leading to widespread international distribution and a successful anime adaptation.
