Pennsylvania German Pioneers: A Publication of the Original Lists of Arrivals in the Port of Philadelphia from 1727 to 1808; in Three Volumes. 1727-1775

This foundational genealogical work was compiled by Ralph Beaver Strassburger and edited by William John Hinke, first published in 1934 by the Pennsylvania German Society. It was created to provide a definitive, consolidated resource of the ship captain's lists and oath records from the Port of Philadelphia, capturing the wave of German-speaking immigrants arriving between 1727 and 1808. The project arose from the need to document the influx of Palatines and other German-speaking settlers who were required by the provincial government to swear oaths of allegiance upon arrival.

The publication is celebrated for its meticulous transcription of original documents, including the ship lists, the captain's logs, and the signatures or marks of the immigrants themselves. It was designed as a multi-volume scholarly reference, intended to preserve primary evidence of immigrant origins and identities that were otherwise scattered or fragile. Within the fields of history and genealogy, it is regarded as an essential, high-utility reference set that remains the standard starting point for researchers tracing Pennsylvania German ancestry.
