Pico-Pico Shounen

Pico-Pico Shounen is a semi-autobiographical manga series authored by Rensuke Oshikiri, first serialized in the late 2000s. The work serves as a nostalgic, often bittersweet examination of the author's childhood spent during the golden age of 1980s and 1990s Japanese gaming culture. Through a series of vignettes, Oshikiri explores the intersection of personal growth and the rapid evolution of video game technology, framing these experiences against the backdrop of a distinct era of domestic arcade and console life.

The art style is characterized by Oshikiri's signature minimalist, sometimes grotesque aesthetic, which provides a stark contrast to the sentimental and occasionally poignant subject matter. The series was designed to evoke a specific sense of 'retro' longing, focusing on the social dynamics found in the messy bedrooms and flickering arcades of youth. Upon its release, the work was well-received by readers who identified with its honest, sometimes unflattering portrayal of obsessive gaming culture, cementing Oshikiri's reputation as a unique chronicler of modern Japanese nostalgia.
