Roland Cashel: By Charles Lever. With Illustrations by Phiz [pseud.]

Roland Cashel was first serialized between 1848 and 1849 before being published as a complete volume. Charles Lever, an Irish novelist known for his picaresque and humorous tales of military and social life, wrote this work during a period of transition in his literary style, moving toward more complex, multi-plot narratives. The novel is noted for its ambitious, albeit sprawling, attempt to blend mystery and melodrama with the author’s signature wit.

The illustrations for the original edition were produced by Hablot Knight Browne, who famously used the pseudonym Phiz. Browne was the primary illustrator for Charles Dickens and brought a similar level of detailed characterization and atmospheric etching to Lever’s work. Phiz’s contributions were instrumental in defining the visual identity of Victorian serial fiction, and his plates for Roland Cashel helped cement the book’s reception as a quintessential example of the illustrated three-decker novel format common to the mid-19th century.
