Sidekick

Sidekick, written by J. Michael Straczynski with art by Tom Mandrake, was published as a limited series by Image Comics starting in 2014. The narrative deconstructs the classic superhero-sidekick dynamic by exploring the grim reality of a hero’s death and the subsequent psychological fallout for the young assistant left behind to manage the burden of that legacy. It emerged during a period where Straczynski was actively subverting traditional tropes, blending dark realism with the high-stakes drama typical of his work in both television and comics.

The visual storytelling by Tom Mandrake captures a gritty, cinematic atmosphere that mirrors the protagonist's descent into disillusionment and uncertainty. Mandrake, known for his work on The Spectre and Batman, utilizes sharp, expressive lines to convey the isolation and frustration inherent in the character's transition from an idealized partner to a disillusioned adult. Upon release, the series was noted for its cynical perspective on the superhero genre and its focus on the human cost of costumed vigilantism.
