Where it came from
Compiled by Ludwig Herrig in the mid-19th century, this volume serves as a comprehensive anthology intended for educational use, specifically targeting European students of the English language. Herrig, a prominent German philologist, aimed to bridge cultural gaps by curating representative excerpts of canonical English and American literary works, framing them with biographical context to facilitate a deeper understanding of the traditions behind the texts.
The design of the work reflects the pedagogical rigour of the Victorian era, characterized by an encyclopedic approach to literature. It features an historical outline of literary development, followed by a structured collection of poetry and prose. Upon its release, the volume was well-received in academic circles, particularly across Germany and Europe, where it became a standard reference for secondary education and university-level philology students for several decades.
