Where it came from
Ludwig Herrig compiled this anthology in the mid-19th century as a pedagogical tool for German students of the English language. Published during a period when English literature was gaining significant academic prestige in Prussian schools, the collection provided curated excerpts from canonical writers to serve as both linguistic models and cultural primers. The text reflects the Victorian-era fascination with categorizing and preserving the literary heritage of the British Isles for a continental audience.
The volume was designed with a strictly utilitarian and scholarly intent, focusing on brevity and accessibility to facilitate classroom study. Herrig, a dedicated philologist and educator, structured the work to highlight the historical progression of English prose and poetry. While not a piece of high aesthetic design, it was well-received in educational circles for its thoughtful biographical sketches and its success in standardizing the study of English classics in non-English speaking academic environments.
