The Frontier in American History

Frederick Jackson Turner originally presented his central thesis, 'The Significance of the Frontier in American History,' as a paper to the American Historical Association in 1893. The work was later compiled into a volume that sought to define the American character through the lens of westward expansion, arguing that the constant process of colonizing a frontier shaped democratic institutions and individualistic values. It emerged from a period of professionalizing historical study, as Turner looked to move beyond institutional analysis toward a more sociological understanding of national development.

The volume’s enduring influence lies in its ambitious narrative framework, which provided a foundational, albeit later contested, mythology for American identity. While modern historians have frequently critiqued the text for its omission of indigenous perspectives and its disregard for the complexities of the populations already present in the territories described, it remains a pillar of twentieth-century historiography. Its design and structure reflect a scholarly attempt to synthesize vast geographic and social changes into a single, cohesive theory of human progress.
